UPDATE: for those of you who have not taken a previous class with Colley. we are making YouTube sessions with him an acceptable alternative…the more the better, since it is to your advantage to be familiar with his techniques!

A rare treat:  Five days, a smaller class, fellow students at a similar high level of  skill and experience, an abundance of interaction and the very best of Colley’s teaching, all taking you well beyond where you are now! This Master Class is designed for the experienced painter only; discussing all the aspects of making art and how to grow as an artist will take you more deeply into an exploration of what makes your work yours. The small number of students allows for deep examination of the advanced approaches that can bring true accomplishment to your painting, and having people with a commonality of skills means everyone is up to speed right from the beginning.

To join the class and before you register online, please email a letter of intent, images of 6-8 examples of your most recent work and a brief painting history…at the very least, several previous YouTube videos of his, the more the better for everyone, to avoid him having to bring you up to speed with his methods. We’ll let you know your status ASAP. Spaces will be allotted to accepted students based on the date of their letter/images email. Class size will be 10-12.In this much smaller class, you’ll be challenged with instruction in techniques well beyond the level of the newer painter, learn how to better use your skills to create more meaningful paintings, and be asked to consider questions such as: Who are you as a painter? What are you reaching for visually? What are you trying to say with your work? Where do you want to take it…or have it take you!! Because the class is small, there will be plenty of time for painting, discussions of painting ideas, studying other artists, individual feedback and group critiques; Colley will lecture and demo as well with the aim to cover a wide range of subjects, including Outdoor Still Life, Landscape, Seascape, Urban Scenes, Boats etc, As in his regular class, but here geared specifically to your higher skill level and greater experience, he’ll address in detail, tonal values, color, composition and brushwork, giving special attention to the importance of shapes, edges and the play between hard and soft which give a painting subtle depth and drama. A favorite focus of his is color and Colley will talk about ways to achieve a sense of depth and distance with your use of color. These tools allow you to strengthen your impressionistic expression. Coupled with your drawing skills, they provide a strong foundation for your work. He’ll also be giving one-on-one advice on how to maximize your Social Media presence, presentation of your work, how to navigate and maximize your gallery experience. If you have a social media site/s e.g., Website, Facebook, Instagram etc, he’ll be happy to review it and make suggestions about presentation and increasing exposure. He will be doing a short session on how to photograph your paintings and edit them to get the best reproduction possible. Please bring a few unframed examples of your work plus one small framed painting to discuss in finer detail. Colley sees himself as more than a teacher. Mentoring online students since 2016 he is clear that if an artist wants to achieve their best work, their painting must extend far beyond the studio. He’ll focus on identifying each student’s strengths and weaknesses, formulating a strategy to help them develop ways to lift their work to the next level, building resilience and skills to inform their painting now and in the future. The small class also allows for sharing insight and knowledge with cross-fertilization from teacher to student/student to student, which Colley has found to be a most productive way to teach. A class of fewer than usual students and all in your skill range, with informative lectures and demos, provocative discussions, significant free painting time, individual attention from your instructor and several interactive group critiques, all intended to raise your level of awareness and execution, this week will stretch you!In Colley’ words: ” Overall, my aim as a teacher is to give you the all-important information and advice you absolutely need to hear, not want to hear, in the most productive and professional way possible as this is the best way to get true growth. Maine is one of my favorite destinations to visit and a sensational region to paint.  I invite you to join me in an exciting week of learning and a wonderful opportunity to elevate your painting to a new level. “

      1. Some General Class Information:

We will make sure you know our 2022 Covid protocols well ahead; please be assured that we will do everything we can to provide a safe environment for you! Compliance with our protocols is required. We’ll decide on carpooling depending on necessary 2022 Covid protocols.

  • Do bring layers for 3 seasons and rain gear…Maine weather changes in a blink and we really never know with any certainty from day to day! We’re fairly informal most everywhere tho, depending on where you eat out…many times, students just clean up in the studio, then head straight to a restaurant…

  • We‘ll process your payment after we get your online Registration and will email you a receipt. A $300 deposit will hold your space. Cancellation and Refund info is at the bottom of the Registration Form…(please do read the Policies before you check that you have!)

  • We’ll send a Supply List and more detailed info after you Register, and again about 2 weeks before the class. Print and tuck into your painting kit…then you’ll know where to find it all! It has the answers to most of your questions!

  • If you will need mediums, let me know and I will have them here for you to buy when you get to class. You are also welcome to ship materials to arrive the week before…ask about details!

  • The first day, the Studio will open at 8:15 AM… Classes run M-F usually between 8:30-4:30, but the exact hours are at the Instructor’s discretion…always an average of 6 hours/day, but starting and ending times may vary according to your instructor.

  • We always have a 1 hr lunch break, to use or not, it’s up to you…and a lunch plan depending on where we are painting. We order in the AM and deliver to your location…you pay in cash on the last day before you leave!

  • We no longer provide bottled water: make sure you have at least one refillable water bottle! Tap water is fine to drink…

  • Our Studios are large, with good light, one with waterviews; you’ll have table space and you are welcome to leave equipment etc. there for the duration of the class.

  • The Plein Air plan for the day is weather-dependent and decided at the end of the previous day if possible, or more likely, when we meet in the Studio each morning! Make sure your Class Monitors know where you have set up, and try to stay close to the demo area. Less running around for them, more time for feedback to you!

  • There is free parking at the Studio building, which is within a few blocks of downtown.

  • We usually carpool  (or sometimes walk if it’s close) to Plein Air painting sites, many of which have shade and at the least, a porta-potty or nearby facilities. You will get good directions. Please, do NOT depend on your GPS unless we say so!

  • Each class has an experienced Monitor (or two!) as your Go-To person for any problems or needs…please ask…we all will do our absolute best to see that you have a great class experience!

  • Downtown has great galleries, shops and food and the area is full of wonderful places to paint, many accessible to the single painter that a class can’t utilize…if you can, take a look around!
