Exploring Color in the Maine Landscape!  Susan Abbott teaches her students to speak the language of visual art. Whether you are working in oils or watermedia, the elements of a strong painting are the same!

Rather than teaching “how-to” paint specific subjects or in a particular style—especially her style—Susan teaches students to see like a painter, emphasizing the topics of color and composition common to all good paintings, regardless of medium. These include selecting a “paintable” plein air subject, drawing quickly, finding a dark and light design, and using color value, temperature and other aspects of color theory to build your painting.

Susan will also emphasize learning from art history and provides a broad exposure to both master painters and contemporary artists, including two one-hour Zoom slide lectures on design and color composition provided the week before the class.

Susan has years of experience an instructor and practitioner of both oil and watercolor and she teaches and demonstrates in both mediums. (New plein air painters are welcome in her class but should have prior painting experience in their medium.)

Holding a teaching goal of helping her students develop their own individual painting approach while also becoming confident with basic and advanced art skills, Susan wants participants to leave her workshop enthused about their own painting approach, and with an appreciation of art as an always challenging, ever-engaging lifelong journey.

  • If you will need mediums, let me know and I will have them here for you to buy when you get to class. You are also welcome to ship materials to arrive the week before…ask about details!

  • The first day, the Studio will open at 8:15 AM… Classes run M-F usually between 8:30-4:30, but the exact hours are at the Instructor’s discretion…always an average of 6 hours/day, but starting and ending times may vary according to your instructor.

  • The Plein Air plan for the day is weather-dependent and decided at the end of the previous day if possible, or more likely, when we meet in the Studio each morning! Make sure your Class Monitors know where you have set up, and try to stay close to the demo area. Less running around for them, more time for feedback to you!
