Tony is going to back to France in October 2017 This will be Tony’s 11th trip to Vaison La Romaine, where he loves to teach workshops in the medieval section of this bustling town as well as in quaint villages nearby. It is a such a treat to travel and paint with someone who knows the area well and is delighted to share his experiences. You’ll paint and learn, enjoy the scenery, the cuisine, wines, the people and the incomparable light of Provence in this magical painter’s paradise.
Your Provence Adventure begins in Marseille on Oct 13 2017. Plan to arrive in the morning to meet our comfortable private coach for our scenic drive to Vaison la Romaine! En route, we will visit one of the area’s delightful towns and have plenty of time to enjoy our first sketching opportunity. Lunch (included) will be waiting for you!
We’ll continue on to our hotel, Le Beffroi, located in the medieval section of Vaison La Romaine, actually part of the old castle ramparts. The curving staircase to your room dates back to the fourteenth century. If the weather is good, we may eat outside in the garden or on the adjoining terrace!
“The hotel was charming, the food good and the staff very accommodating. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.” (From a former participant)
Provence is indeed an artists’ paradise and it’s our aim to allow you lots of time to paint and sketch.
You’ll paint near the hotel in the medieval part of the town, and in fascinating nearby villages. There’ll be plenty of time to paint on your own, shop, sketch, relax, enjoy the food! Tony’s instruction is impeccable, thorough, with an abundance of individual attention. He will do daily demos, lecture, show you how to select and paint a subject and take you thru wonderful group critiques, using acetate to develop your painting without marking it!
“one of the best (if not THE best) trip I ever made and believe me, I’m rather well traveled! I was happy 24/7! Provence itself, the group, the lodging, the food, and of course, the teacher! ” (Comment from a recent participant and fine painter!)
On our last class morning in Vaison, Oct 22, you’ll stop on our ride back to Marseille for a scenic lunch break a and a visit to the van Gogh Museum at St Remy. You’ll end your Provencal Adventure with a Farewell Dinner and overnite in Marseille. When you leave the next day, Oct 23, you’ll take memories of this beautiful part of France in Spring. Your paintings, sketchbook journal and photographs will bring back treasured memories to keep for years to come.
Tony creates terrific sketchbooks to capture and keep handy the memories of each of his trips! He’ll teach you the tricks of quick painterly sketches and how to enhance them with your written notes, menus, photos, whatever you’ve saved that will bring back the whole sense of place! It is also an easy way to be creative without bringing along your entire plein air kit. This whole workshop came to life several years ago, when I was looking thru one of Tony’s sketchbooks and mentioned how much I would like to go to Provence!! Look what happened!

Provence seems like a dream, and such a lovely dream! The workshop was terrific and the accommodations were just perfect.” Comment from a previous participant
An energetic and inspired pioneer in the field of plein air painting workshops, Tony van Hasselt is a legend, well known for his superb instruction, thorough critiques and great choices of painting sites. Wherever he teaches, Tony packs his classes with solid, useful information about all aspects of plein air watercolor painting…all delivered with humor and verve! He is a fine painter and a Master Instructor! Tony’s ability to graphically illustrate problems and solutions as they arise during a demonstration, combined with his energetic and enthusiastic teaching style, make him a highly popular instructor, appreciated for his empathy with student struggles. He “has been there”, has gone through the same frustrations and tries not to forget those normal stages in one’s artistic development. van Hasselt, who grew up in The Netherlands, worked in display and graphic design prior to his arrival in the US. Painting was pursued in evening classes and later on a full-time basis under Frank Reilly, a popular teacher at New York’s famous Art Students League. In 1963, as one of the first pioneers in the field, van Hasselt organized world-wide workshops, taught by artists he admired. In this way, his idols, John Pike, Edgar A. Whitney, Robert E. Wood, Tom Hill, Milford Zornes and Rex Brandt became his mentors and friends in art.
