Ted Nuttal: Master of the Watercolor Portrait!

Ted says: “My passion is painting people. I paint from photos. In my demos, I discuss anatomy,  expression, emotion, light, color, composition and the benefits of working from a photographic reference, employing my experience as a watercolorist in my instruction. My desire is for each student to discover enriched thinking and seeing skills that can translate to any medium and subject. And, I believe ardently, that these lessons apply, regardless of the skill level of the student.

Ted’s intent to cultivate in each workshop participant, an awakening to how and what an artist might be thinking as they approach a painting.  Thru daily demonstrations and presentations, hewill share his personal approach to painting – and introduce the work of other artists with the objective of inspiring enriched seeing and thinking skills. His goal is to provide, thru a creative and supportive atmosphere, an enjoyable hands-on learning experience, and to facilitate a heightened awareness that students can use in their work and daily lives. He’ll provide significant time for one-on-one instruction and encourages, in each participant, a renewed enthusiasm for their art, regardless of their skill level.

Ted’s Artist Statement: For as long as I can remember, I have been a fascinated spectator of human behavior – the quintessential people watcher. I naturally seek the unique character in everyone I encounter. Often, as I observe someone in his or her everyday environment, I am rewarded with a moment when a gesture or expression combine with the play of light and shadow.  A contemplative smile, hands cradling a book or carefully tying a shoe, a shadow cast by a pair of wire-rimmed glasses – and there occurs a pivotal instant when a story appears. My paintings are an attempt to compose and thoughtfully record the nuances that transfixed these moments, these stories, in my mind. Matisse expresses the notion superbly: ‘I do not literally paint that table, but the emotion it produces upon me.’”

    • If you will need mediums, let me know and I will have them here for you to buy when you get to class. You are also welcome to ship materials to arrive the week before…ask about details!

    • The first day, the Studio will open at 8:15 AM… Classes usually run M-F between 8:30-4:30, but the exact hours are at the Instructor’s discretion…always an average of 6 hours/day, but starting and ending times may vary according to your instructor.

    • We eat dinner (Dutch) somewhere as a group at least once, usually Monday nite for starters; friends, companions, hosts are welcome to come along. If we have an alternate plan, we’ll let you know!

    • We always have a 1 hr lunch break, to use or not, it’s up to you…and a lunch plan depending on where we are painting. We order in the AM and deliver to your location…you pay in cash on the last day before you leave!

    • Each class has an experienced Monitor (or two!) as your Go-To person for any problems or needs…please ask…we all will do our absolute best to see that you have a great class experience!

    • Downtown in both locations has great galleries, shops and food and the area is full of wonderful places to paint, many accessible to the single painter that a class can’t utilize…if you can, take a look around!
