TWO FOR ONE!What a treat to have both Ray & Peggi Kroll Roberts teaching your class! Work with one, the other or both…details of their class plans are coming soon. What I know for sure, is that it will be really exciting! You’ll work some in the Studio, some on location, and in whatever medium you like! This promises to be a week full of info and inspiration!

********************************************************************************************************************Peggi paints outdoor figures using luscious color and intense values to accentuate her subjects and gets to the essence of the figure with simple bold shapes. Her work is based on a complete understanding of her subject, knowing important values, and using only what is required to convey the image, breaking down complex multiple values into the bare minimum that shows only what is necessary for the finished painting to be seen as complete. Peggi is happy to leave re-creating reality to those who prefer it; her intention is to suggest, rather than render!

An exercise-oriented instructor, she creates plans to help both the beginner and the advanced artist reach successful results with more confidence. Peggi will address the fundamentals of design, drawing, value, and color through exercises that will set the groundwork necessary for solid picture making in your own voice!**************************************************************************************************************Ray will be sharing his approach to outdoor painting, covering concept, site selection, design, layout, as well as color comparison and execution. His approach is direct, creating an accurate and thought-out light/dark pattern, following up with a lay-in of dark colors and finishing up with the light shapes. Seeking rhythm, beauty, and ambiguity in painting while searching for a sense of time and place, Ray likes to capture the essence of scene in a lively two hour sketch while talking through his process so you know what he is thinking while he is doing! Believing every aspect to a painting is as critical as your ability to render what’s in front of you, Ray says seeing the abstract image in a scene is the first step in visualizing a painting; then comes weighing the interest quality of your concept. He makes vibrant use of color, bold textures, and his sensitivity to shifting patterns of light give life and movement to his paintings. He’ll lead you thru exercises designed to enforce these concepts and enhance your observation and painting skills so you can better capture what you see and feel.

The recipient of many awards, interviewed frequently (https://doorcountypulse.com/114593-2/) and published in Southwest Art and Plein Air Magazine, Peggi Kroll-Roberts was trained at Arizona State University and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Peggi worked initially as a fashion and advertising illustrator before making the transition into fine art, a big step for a woman with children and a mortgage! Using intense color and value to accentuate her subject, she brought a bold palette, a love for small paintings and a very loose style that achieves a lot with a few very energetic brush strokes, preferring to suggest reality than render it, and never looked back. Inspired by her children early on, she painted beach scenes and other aspects of their lives and continues to be fascinated by painting the figure. Peggi also breaks away from the conventional still life by painting scenes of cosmetics and the occasional coffee cup or slab of butter, offering a new appreciation of daily life thru her use of bold color, shapes and value power. As popular a teacher as she is a painter, Peggi is much in demand for her many workshops.                                                                                                   *****************************************************************************Best known for his seascapes, figurative work, and majestic views of California and the Southwest, award winning artist, Ray Roberts is one of California’s most respected outdoor painters. He was born in 1954 and grew up in Orange County, California. with its orange groves, before the days of freeways and sprawling housing developments which gave him an enduring affection for the untamed, undeveloped California of his youth. Ray attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena where he met his wife Peggi Kroll Roberts, graduating in 1978 with a bachelor of fine arts degree in advertising illustration. He pursued a career as an illustrator, first establishing a studio in Los Angeles and then Scottsdale before switching to full time fine art in 1992. Like Peggi, he never looked back! He is a signature member of the Plein-Air Painters of America, the California Art Club, and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association and has participated in numerous invitational exhibitions and group shows. Ray has also been published in Southwest Art Magazine, Western Art Collector Magazine and Plein Air Magazine. He and Peggi now live in Angels Camp, CA where he paints full time when he’s not traveling to teach.

  • If you will need mediums, let me know and I will have them here for you to buy in class. You are also welcome to ship materials to arrive the week before…ask for the address and details!

  • The first day, the Studio will open at 8:15 AM… Classes usually run M-F between 8:30-4:30, but the exact hours are at the Instructor’s discretion…never fewer than 6 hours total/day, but starting and ending times may vary according to your instructor.

  • We eat dinner (Dutch) somewhere as a group at least once, usually Monday nite for starters; friends, companions, hosts are welcome to come along.

  • We always have a 1 hr lunch break, to use or not, it’s up to you…and a lunch plan depending on where we are painting. We order in the AM…you pay in cash on the last day before you leave!

  • There is free parking at the Studio building, which is within a few blocks of downtown.

  • We carpool 3 to a car (or sometimes walk if it’s close) to Plein Air painting sites, many of which have shade and at the least, a porta-potty or nearby facilities. You will get good directions and we usually caravan. Please, do NOT depend on your GPS unless we say so!

  • Each class has an experienced Monitor (or two!) as your Go-To person for any problems or needs…please ask…we all will do our absolute best to see that you have a great class experience!

  • Downtown has great galleries, shops and food and the area is full of wonderful places to paint, many accessible to the single painter that a class can’t utilize…if you can, take a look around!
