Peggi paints outdoor figures using luscious color and intense values to accentuate her subjects and gets to the essence of the figure with simple bold shapes. Her work is based on a complete understanding of her subject, knowing important values, and using only what is required to convey the image, breaking down complex multiple values into the bare minimum that shows only what is necessary for the finished painting to be seen as complete. She’s happy to leave re-creating reality to those who prefer it; her intention is to suggest, rather than render!

An exercise-oriented instructor, she creates plans to help both the beginner and the advanced artist reach successful results with more confidence. Peggi will address the fundamentals of design, drawing, value, and color through exercises that will set the groundwork necessary for solid picture making in your own voice! The tools she provides will serve you well!

Note:Your Model Fees for this class are included in your tuition.

The recipient of many awards, interviewed frequently ( and published in Southwest Art and Plein Air Magazine, Peggi Kroll-Roberts was trained at Arizona State University and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Peggi worked initially as a fashion and advertising illustrator before making the transition into fine art, a big step for a woman with children and a mortgage! Using intense color and value to accentuate her subject, she brought a bold palette, a love for small paintings and a very loose style that achieves a lot with a few very energetic brush strokes, preferring to suggest reality than render it, and never looked back. Inspired by her children early on, she painted beach scenes and other aspects of their lives and continues to be fascinated by painting the figure. Peggi also breaks away from the conventional still life by painting scenes of cosmetics and the occasional coffee cup or slab of butter, offering a new appreciation of daily life thru her use of bold color, shapes and value power. As popular a teacher as she is a painter, Peggi is much in demand for her many workshops.

Some General Class Information:

  • We will process your payment after we get your online Registration and will email you a receipt. A $300 deposit will hold your space. Cancellation and Refund info is at the bottom of the online Registration Form…(please do read the Policies before you check that you have!)

  • We’ll send a Supply List and more detailed info when you Register, and again about 2 weeks before the class. Print and tuck into your painting kit…then you’ll know where to find it all!

  • If you will need mediums, let me know and I will have them here for you to buy in class. You are also welcome to ship materials to arrive the week before…ask for the address and details!

  • The first day, the Studio will open at 8:15 AM… Classes usually run M-F between 8:30-4:30, but the exact hours are at the Instructor’s discretion…never fewer than 6 hours total/day, but starting and ending times may vary according to your instructor.

  • We eat dinner (Dutch) somewhere as a group at least once, usually Monday nite for starters; friends, companions, hosts are welcome to come along.

  • We always have a 1 hr lunch break, to use or not, it’s up to you…and a lunch plan depending on where we are painting. We order in the AM…you pay in cash on the last day before you leave!

  • The Plein Air plan for the day is weather-dependent and decided at the end of the previous day if possible, or more likely, when we meet in the Studio each morning!

  • If your class is Plein Air, make sure your Class Monitors know where you have set up, and try to stay close to the demo area. Less running around for them, more time for feedback to you!

  • Our Studio is large with good light; you’ll have your own table space and you are welcome to leave equipment etc. there for the duration of the class. It is possible to stay and paint after hours, we’ll explain the logistics!

  • There is free parking at the Studio building, which is within a few blocks of downtown.

  • We carpool 3 to a car (or sometimes walk if it’s close) to Plein Air painting sites, many of which have shade and at the least, a porta-potty or nearby facilities. You will get good directions and we usually caravan. Please, do NOT depend on your GPS unless we say so!

  • Each class has an experienced Monitor (or two!) as your Go-To person for any problems or needs…please ask…we all will do our absolute best to see that you have a great class experience!

  • Downtown has great galleries, shops and food and the area is full of wonderful places to paint, many accessible to the single painter that a class can’t utilize…if you can, take a look around!
