UPDATE!! WE ARE GOING! A FEW ROOMS AVAILABLE ONLY TILL JUNE 30!!!
What could be better than Venice in October with Colley Whisson! The big crowds are gone, the weather is still balmy! The scenery is always spectacular and Colley, who will show us the hidden delights of this beautiful city, is the perfect instructor to help you capture the sights, sense and spirit of this Speaking of which…let us think of the food!! Ah…the food!
Our hotel, a former convent, has a lovely garden area & is close to the Grand Canal & the train station; we can walk to great off-the-beaten-path painting sites! Our included dinners will be at a wonderful restaurant overlooking the Canal and we will have a vaporetto pass to do some water travel…likely to paint on Burano and maybe the Lido, (a favorite of Colley’s) We will also take a day-trip to Padua by bus so you can see the countryside and sight-see or paint as you choose in the city!!
Colley paints to give expression to visual ideas, not copy nature: “It is not what you paint but how you paint it.” He captures light, painting with quick precision to convey the clearest, purest message possible and always striving to put down a loose, spontaneous response, using his brush “like Zorro’s sword, dashing in darks and marvelous highlights with all possible confidence and skill. Colley’s classes in Maine are always sold out early; his generous and thorough attention to his students is legendary!
Colley will help you establish a personal working foundation to support your exploration of the world of Modern Impressionism, addressing tonal values, composition, color and brushwork, giving special attention to the importance of edges and the play between hard and soft which give a painting subtle depth and drama. These are the tools that allow you to move into strong impressionistic expression. His Plein Air demos will let you see his approach to painting outside; you’ll also have plenty of time to work on your own, with lots of individual help. Colley has painted in Venice (married to an Italian, he has a special affinity for the culture!) It’s a dramatic and fascinating venue perfectly suited to his passionate, fluid response to what he sees!
Colley will conduct the workshop step-by-step so you can see him construct a painting from start to finish. He’ll analyze yours, giving you insightful info & tailoring an individual program to help assist your lift to the next level. He is a pleasure to study with, soft-spoken, full of info, attention and most generous with his time. Colley’s relaxed Australian manner ensures his workshops are positive and uplifting, a great environment for learning! His students have loved his attentive and informative classes! We will take care of the rest of the details that make this a memorable trip to a magical place!
